Born in 1934. MD cum laude at Milan Medical School in 1958, Master in Public Health 1960, PhD in Hygiene (1965) and Microbiology (1967).

Full professor of Hygiene in Milan University 1970-1986, full professor of Hygiene at Sapienza University in Roma 1986-2009, Interim Professor of Public Health at the School of Architecture and at the Bocconi University (1999-2009), both in Milan.

Director of the Institute of Hygiene in Milan (1974-1986) and in Rome (1988-2002), of the Department of Public Health Sciences 2004-2007 in Rome, of the School of Public Health in Milan (1974-1986) and in Rome (1987-2009).

Director of the University Hospital Centralized Laboratory in Milan 1974-86, Chief of the Hospital Hygiene Service in Rome 1988-2006. Periods in UK and USA working in epidemiology of viral diseases and vaccination policies (School of Public Health, University of Michigan).

Member (1985-1988) and Chairman of Section II (1988-1994) of the National Health Council. Member of the National Vaccination Committee, Italian Ministry of Health and Chief of the WHO/Euro polio-free Commission for Italy.

Major scientific interests in epidemiology of infectious diseases, in environmental health, in the evaluation of vaccinations and in health organization and management.

Over 700 scientific papers and one Textbook of Hygiene (6 editions). Member of the International Epidemiological Association, of the Council of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA – seated in the Governing Council 2002-2009), of ASPHER (Association of the Schools of Public Health of the European Region).

President 1997-1998 of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (; Member 2013-2018 of the Board of “Probiviri”, same Society
